Huntsville Council's July 23 meeting was held in Port Sydney.

Mayor says he’s ‘not mad’ about upcoming recommendation on a future hospital model

While the Mayor was pretty tight-lipped about a long-awaited recommendation on a preferred future hospital model being delivered to the hospital board at its Aug. 8 meeting, it sounds like good news for Huntsville and area.

“I’m not allowed to tell you what the recommendation is, but I’m not mad,” Huntsville Mayor Scott Aitchison told his fellow councillors on Monday night, at their July 23 meeting held in Port Sydney.

The Mayor has been vocal about the need for two fully-functioning hospitals, one in Huntsville and one in Bracebridge, but he would go no further on the Capital Plan Development Task Force’s conclusion, lest he get sued, he quipped.

Aitchison is one of 25 task force members who have been studying three future hospital models for the past year. They’re expected to deliver their recommendation to a special Board of Directors’ meeting of Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare, to be held at the Huntsville hospital site on August 8.

The three models the task force has been reviewing are:

  • Two Acute Sites
  • Inpatient Site/Outpatient Site
  • One Site

The meeting is open to the public and begins at 5:30 p.m. Those wishing to attend are being asked to register here or call 705-789-2311 ext. 2881 and leave a message with your name and phone number.

You can also watch the presentation live online by visiting: www.mahc.ca/webcast on August 8 at 5:30 p.m.

The silence of the lambs, Len, or should I say sheep.

What am I missing here? Where is the usual hysteria about this upcoming decision? Where are the pitchforks and burning torches and petitions and demands for board firings? Could it be that this MAHC committee has actually listened and carefully considered input from the community? Is it possible that the mud-slinging and insults and heated public meetings were all for naught and that this group will recommend the plan that we all want?

At what point will we say “thank you” to the 25 men and women who worked for an entire year on this project? I’ll bet that the silence will be deafening.
