Port Sydney residents have been making some funny faces lately.
No, they’re not disgruntled about any specific thing, they’re just good sports trying to raise some money for their beloved community signs. You know, the ones Port Sydney is famous for: ‘Welcome to Port Sydney the home of 800 nice families & one old grouch.’
The problem, according to Port Sydney, Utterson and Area Chamber of Commerce president Derek Watson-Brown, is two of the three signs did not winter well and they’re showing their age.
“They’ve been around for a while so we thought it would be a great community-building event to try and replace those signs having a grouch competition,” he explained.
The funds raised will go towards the signs and a contribution to the Port Sydney Community Hall. So, the contest is on to find Port Sydney’s next grouch! The winner will get a bunch of community swag and an honorary seat at the annual Port Sydney turkey dinner.
There are two ways you can contribute: you can either vote for your favourite grouch by making a monetary donation (you don’t have to live in Port Sydney). If you’re a resident of the Port Sydney and Utterson area, you can also submit your own grouch photo for $10. You can vote for your favourite grouch and/or submit your own grouch photo here. Contest details are available here. The competition closes on August 21, 2019, at 6 p.m.
“We’re asking for grouchy faces but to be honest with you we know all the people on there aren’t really grouches,” noted Watson-Brown.
Apparently, this isn’t the first time Port Sydney has had a grouch contest but that contest would likely have been long before the Internet. “It was just people putting money into jars, as I understood it. It was actually before we even came to this village 15 years ago, so yes, it’s been a while,” said Watson-Brown.
He said the last grouch he knows of was George Wilson who was anything but a grouch.
“He was just the nicest guy that you could ever meet, so friendly and so generous. He wasn’t a grouch at all,” said Watson-Brown, adding that the contest and the title is simply a fun way to build up community spirit and raise funds for a good cause.
