TLDSB shares the 2023-2024 EQAO assessment scores

From TLDSB

The Education Quality and Assessment Office (EQAO) has released the latest results for school boards in Ontario from the 2023-2024 school year. Trillium Lakelands District School Board (TLDSB) is pleased to share the results Grade 3, 6, 9, and 10 students have made in all assessment areas of EQAO.

“On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I am proud of the students for their achievements in EQAO. These results show us that student achievement is being reached through the hard work being done by TLDSB educators, support staff, and administrators,” shared Chair of the Board, Colleen Wilcox.

In the elementary panel, the results for TLDSB Grade 3 reading, writing, and mathematics are all above the provincial average. In Grade 3 reading, writing, and mathematics and Grade 6 reading, students with Individual Education Plans (IEPs) are also above the provincial average.

Mathematic scores have continued to grow over the past three years, with 2023-2024 results being eight per cent above the provincial average overall. Grades 3 and 6 mathematics scores improved, with a four per cent increase in Grade 3, and two per cent increase in Grade 6.

“We are proud of the increased achievement in mathematics in Grades 3 and 6 over the past three years and recognize that there are areas of growth, particularly in Grade 6 reading and writing. TLDSB is committed to supporting the system with development opportunities, resources, and hands-on support for student achievement overall,” said superintendent of learning responsible for Kindergarten to Grade 8 Curriculum Services, Jay MacJanet.

There are areas to celebrate in the secondary panel as well. TLDSB Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) scores for students with an IEP are eight per cent above the provincial average. In comparison to last year’s results, OSSLT scores remained stable at 84 percent, and there was also a one per cent increase in students achieving a Level 4 scoring in Grade 9 mathematics.

“As we continue to work toward personal success for each student across our system, a continued focus on incorporating problem-solving tasks, along with providing direct instruction with deliberate practice, will ensure support for students to be successful,” says superintendent of learning responsible for Grade 9 to 12 Curriculum Services, Kim Williams.

More information on EQAO results can be found on the EQAO Interactive Dashboard, or specific TLDSB results can be found on the School Board Profile.

The TLDSB EQAO results demonstrate teachers in this area have a clear focus on students’ learning and the entire team of educators involved should be congratulated. Furthermore, EQAO data are the best way for parents, students and the general public to compare learning in this area to what is occurring elsewhere in the Province. The system isn’t perfect but those involved in educational evaluation at regional, provincial, national and international levels support the process because it is evidence-based and it works.

Hats off to our exceptional educators who work under exceptional pressure to generate exceptional learning results that are often dismissed, under-appreciated and too often challenged by well-meaning critics who lack comprehensive understanding of the facts.

I don’t believe the stats. No way these grades are reaching the levels said here. I know a dozen kids that are way behind due to covid shutdown. I wonder if they just took some kids and not all of them. I’m sure averaging out grades would not be at or above level. I never believe these.
