Three local organizations partner to offer online Artists in the Schools program

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the arts have been curtailed for all kinds of reasons. This includes schools and students participating in online learning.

The Huntsville Festival of the Arts (HfA), the Huntsville Art Society (HAS), and the Monarch Performing Arts Studio (MPAS) have come together in a partnership to support teachers and students with arts curriculum by creating and sharing a catalogue of short videos created by local artists that demonstrate an artistic skill.

“The arts are vital to the development and well being of youth,” say the organizers. “During these extremely challenging times, we want to do all we can to support our wonderful teachers and students, as well as also our many talented local artists.”

In collaboration with a number of local teachers, the group has developed some trial videos that have been used by select classrooms. These have included artists Jack Gaughan, Pam Carnochan, Helena Renwick, and Suzanne Riverin. The feedback so far has been very positive.

“Resources like this are extremely valuable for our students,” says teacher Caroline Heyblom. “They offer interesting learning experiences, connections to the artists working in our community, and opportunities for students to be creative and have fun.”

The collective is seeking visual or performing artists interested in creating five- to 10-minute instructional videos. While the main focus is for students from grades 5-8, demonstrations that appeal to different ages will also be considered. Given COVID restrictions, demonstrations that use materials that are easily accessed at home are encouraged. The group also encourages demonstrations that take place or incorporate the outdoors.

Honorariums are available for participating artists, as well as support with video recording. Once completed, the instructional videos will be made freely available to teachers and students.

Honorariums for visual artists will be funded through the Brenda Wainman Goulet Memorial Fund, while performing artists will be paid through the Huntsville Festival of the Arts Educational Reserve.
