A community partnership has allowed for the donation of ‘fuelling’ products to the Huntsville/Lake of Bays Fire Department to meet fire fighting demands amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

It was with great pleasure that Dr. Lowell Greib and Jay Glassman presented the Huntsville/Lake of Bays Fire Department with supplies that will assist in fuelling fire fighters in operational settings.

Dr. Greib, who has been the volunteer medical director for the Toronto Marathon for over a decade, collaborated with Glassman, the race director, to make the donation possible. The Toronto Marathon, which was scheduled in early May was cancelled early in the pandemic.

“Partnerships for the Toronto Marathon were secured months in advance,” said Glassman. “This included our relationship with CLIF. With already having the product, we were looking to contribute the fuel to those that would use it in the community. With Lowell’s suggestion, the Toronto Marathon decided that the contribution to the Huntsville/Lake of Bays Fire Department made complete sense.”

The SportLab has a long-standing relationship with the Huntsville/Lake of Bays Fire Department in assisting fire fighters to physically perform their jobs.

“Our fire fighters are occupational athletes. They are asked to perform tasks that are physically demanding in nature—similar to those who compete in high performance sport,” said Greib. “The physical demands are accentuated by the environment in which they work. Add in wearing heavy and hot gear, and environmental conditions of 30-plus degrees and you have the makings of extreme work conditions. Demanding conditions, over extended periods that can be hours in length requires fuel to meet the physical demands.”

The contribution of almost $1,500 in performance fuel will keep the fire department stocked and ready to maintain on-scene fire fighter performance until the end of the year.
