Swing bridge has reopened, Main Street construction continues

·

Stage 2 of the construction on Main Street began on Wednesday, June 16, 2021.

The swing bridge and Brunel Road are now open as construction moves further west. Main Street is now closed to traffic from Brunel Road to Centre Street, and King Street is closed from Main to Dara Howell Way.

Some work will continue in the Stage 1 area in the next few weeks as crews finish sidewalk installation, plant trees, and install lamp posts and the Brunel intersection traffic signals. As sidewalks are installed, there may be temporary restrictions in certain areas, and traffic may be reduced to a single lane at times. River Street will remain closed until bridge work is completed.

Westbound and eastbound traffic will detour south of the construction area onto Brunel Road, Veterans Way, and Centre Street. Traffic travelling north or south will detour between Brunel Road and Centre Street along Veterans Way.

Pedestrian access will remain open at all times across the bridge. A temporary three-way stop will be in place at John St to allow for pedestrian crossing as crews continue with bridge work. Pedestrian access remains open and accessible throughout downtown in all stages of construction.

All businesses in the construction zone are open and following COVID-19 protocols.

While work on the underside of the swing bridge occurs, boat traffic can continue to pass under the bridge, but height restrictions are temporarily in place. The approximate maximum height for passage under the bridge is nine feet. Some boat tops/canopies may need to be put down while navigating under the bridge. Signage will be in place to provide notice to boaters in advance.

That is great – should make it easier to get to north/east side of town for some of us. I’m impressed at how the bridge master’s house looks. It was built in the spring of 2016 by the students at Huntsville High School and hoisted into place some time later. Great job.

It was sure nice this morning to come into town on Brunel and go across the bridge to shoppers and canadian tire without going all around town. Everything is looking great going to be great for the town once it’s finished.

    This is wonderful news!
Hopefully it will ease the traffic somewhat on Centre Street.
I think you are doing a great job on the construction.
