The Huntsville/Lake of Bays Fire Department is continuing its fire safety inspection blitz on summer camps in our area. With the season in full swing, the department is ensuring that summer camps remain safe for both the employees and the children attending these camps.
So far this year, fines totaling over $2 000 have been issued for smoke alarms that were not operational or that were out of date.
“Only working smoke alarms give you the early notification of fire and the time you need to safely escape,” says Stephen Hernen, Fire Chief of the Huntsville/Lake of Bays Fire Department. “We have zero tolerance for violations involving smoke alarms and will continue to actively enforce the requirements.”
There are obligations under the Ontario Fire Code for owners to ensure the fire safety of persons who rent a home, cottage or attend a summer camp. Regardless if this is on a short-term or long-term basis. Every person who contravenes any provision of the Ontario Fire Code and every.director or officer of a corporation who knowingly concurs in such contravention is guilty of a provincial offence. Failure to maintain a smoke alarm in operating condition is a violation and upon conviction persons may be subject to a fine, imprisonment, or both.
