At its June 27 meeting, Huntsville council agreed to enter into a lease agreement with Smokin’ Hot BBQ to operate at the McCulley Robertson Recreation Park.
The space will be leased to the business for the sum of $1,012, which will be prorated for 2022.
According to a report from Greg Pilling, manager of facility operations, sales and customer service at the Town, in 2018 the Town entered into a three-year lease agreement with Connor Homes to operate the concession service at the park. The agreement expired in 2021.
“Due to the uncertainty surrounding the pandemic at that time, Connor Homes did not extend their lease and no other operator came forward to operate the Concession Stand,” according to Pillig’s report.
In May, municipal staff issues a Request for Proposal (RFP) to operate the concession stand and McCulley and no one responded.
Pilling noted that Julie Moore owner of Smokin Hot BBQ approached the municipality in June about operating the concession stand at the park.
“The agreement would be for 1 year with an option to renew for up to 3 additional years. The value of the lease for the first year would be at the 2022 Council approved budgeted lease rate of $1,012 (typically Victoria Weekend to September 30th). Due to the fact that the Lessee would not occupy the space until approximately the first week of July, the lease value would be prorated based on their actual weeks of occupancy,” he stated.
Both parties will have the ability to consider whether to renew the lease for another two years following the first year.

Best of luck to smokin hot barbecue. A unique and delicious addition to our town!
On behalf of the Muskoka Hornets I want to thank the Town of Huntsville for making these arrangements as we will be hosting several tournaments this summer at McCulley starting this weekend and the snack bar is an essential part of making a great tourney weekend
I also want to give a big shout out to Stanley – Ziggy – Rimmington for working behind the scenes with the Town to make sure we didn’t go without a concession stand after there were no applications to the initial tender. Stan does so much for local baseball including a lot of the behind the scenes and under appreciated work such as finding merchants to run our snack bar. Thank you Town and thank you Ziggy.
Let’s play ball
