Next leaf and yard waste collection day is Nov. 7

A message from the District of Muskoka

The next leaf and yard waste collection day for residential households in the green bin service area is Saturday, November 7, 2020 beginning at 8 a.m.

  • Kraft paper bags
  • Cardboard boxes
  • Open-ended rigid containers that can be dumped and left behind (for example, garbage cans)
  • Brush/twigs must be contained same as above or tied together with string – not to exceed 2ft x 3ft

We compost in Muskoka.

After scheduled collection occurs on Saturday, November 7, 2020, the District reminds residents that leaves are not collected at the curb as part of curbside garbage limits.

Making sure leaf and yard waste material doesn’t enter the garbage is an important part of the District of Muskoka’s waste management strategy to extend the life of our Rosewarne Landfill. When buried in the landfill, leaves create methane (a greenhouse gas) as they break down. Diverting this material allows us to create valuable compost, used as a soil amendment.

Here are some easy ways to get rid of leaves and yard waste this season:

  • Urban areas: Bag them and put them to the curb on Saturday, November 7 before 8 a.m. for curbside collection.
  • Leave your leaves! Mulch leaves and leave them on the lawn for healthy grass next summer.
  • Deliver residential leaf and yard waste to a licensed waste facility at no charge. We’ll compost it!

As the District continues to support our community as we monitor COVID-19, we strongly encourage residents to apply the same public health measures at our waste facilities as they would when using other services during the pandemic, such as physical distancing, adhering to onsite signage and washing your hands often.
