I love Dyers. We’ve been going there for decades. It is a beautiful spot for a picnic, and has such a meaningful history.
It is worth the investment, particularly in the beautiful gardens, simply as a public good.
I’ve not a resident of huntsville, however, and i suspect many other users of the park are not as well. It seems unfair to burden the taxpayers of huntsville with the entire cost.
One solution might be a one time investment to expand and make nice the parking lot, then install a cash operated gate. That way those who use the park would be making their fair contribution to its upkeep.
The same end could probably be achieved more affordably, though with less efficacy, by using the spot-check-permit method used in many places by Ontario Parks. In that model, the parking lot remains ungated and anyone can drive in. But signs are posted letting you know that your car must display a permit in order to park there. Permits can be purchased and printed off the town website – where perhaps town residents would get a reduced rate. Town by-law officials could conduct sporadic spot checks and issue tickets to those caught parking without a permit.
Bottom line, the park is worth investing in, and as long as those in charge have the will to do it, a way can be found to make that investment fair and affordable.
This is great, I hope all are on board with fixing up the memorial, its a wondrful part of Huntsville❤️
