Massage for a Cause supports the YWCA Muskoka December 6 Fund for the second year

Kyley Duncan, owner of Balance RMT, is holding her second annual Massage for the Cause in support of the YWCA Muskoka December 6 Fund which provides microloans to women fleeing abusive situations.

December 6 was deemed the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women after 13 female students and a female administrator at l’École Polytechnique de Montréal were murdered on that day in 1989 because they were women. (The women killed in the massacre were Geneviève Bergeron, 21; Hélène Colgan, 23; Nathalie Croteau, 23; Barbara Daigneault, 22; Anne-Marie Edward, 21; Maud Haviernick, 29; Barbara Klueznick, 31; Maryse Laganière, 25; Maryse Leclair, 23; Anne-Marie Lemay, 22; Sonia Pelletier, 23; Michèle Richard, 21; Anne St-Arneault, 23; and Annie Turcotte, 21.)

This year, Duncan will once again offer massages and she has teamed up with Elizabeth Rumball Thrush, owner of Devine Day Spa, who will be offering services such as facials, manicures and pedicures. One hundred per cent of all proceeds from all of the services they provide on December 6 will be donated to the YWCA Muskoka December 6 fund.

“We do this event to raise awareness on domestic violence,” said Duncan. “We are willing to give up a day to give a women a way out.”

Duncan’s daughter, Hope, wanted to be involved so she will be in the clinic that day as well holding a bake sale in order to generate more money for the fund.

There are still slots left for both massage and spa services on December 6, so book now if you want to be a part of the day. To book a massage, visit balancermtmuskoka.com. For spa services you can text 705-327-8854 or email [email protected].

The December 6 fund, which was the first of its kind in Canada, was created in 1990 in Toronto to provide interest-free loans to women fleeing abusive situations. It was transferred to the YWCA in 2007.

All money raised for the YWCA Muskoka December 6 Fund stays in Muskoka and will provide microloans to local women. The loans of up to $500 can be used to pay for bills in arrears, hydro, furniture or moving expenses, and loans of up to $750 can be used for rent. Since 2013, 41 women have received loans from YWCA Muskoka’s December 6th Fund.

Congratulations to Ms. Duncan!: I can think of few worthier causes. And I have a related query: at what time and at what location will the Remembrance Ceremony be on December 6th?
