A message from the Town of Huntsville
With spring quickly approaching, Diggin’ Downtown construction is scheduled to start next week. We’re getting ready to upgrade one of the busiest intersections in Huntsville.
Starting March 14, 2022, construction will happen at the Main Street and Centre Street intersection. Main Street from Lorne Street South to West Street will be fully closed to motorists. Similar to previous work, these sections will be accessible to pedestrians at all times. Planned upgrades include underground water and sewer replacement with new service connections, an upgraded accessible signalized intersection, new crosswalk, new sidewalks, curbs and new smooth driving surface.
The Town of Huntsville and District of Muskoka recognize that closing this intersection will cause significant inconveniences to our community. We are working with our partners to complete this work as quickly as possible. This closure is necessary to ensure that the work is expedited while also ensuring the safety of members of the public accessing downtown.
About Diggin’ Downtown
Diggin’ Downtown construction started in March 2021 to replace underground water and sewer pipes that deliver critical services to our community – these services are old, and require upgrades before emergencies, and unplanned outages happen.
At the same time, the Town is taking the opportunity to address the sidewalk, landscaping and accessibility features of the area with a Muskoka-inspired streetscape design. The Diggin’ Downtown project is expected to be complete in Summer, 2022. For project updates and to stay in the know, please visit Huntsville.ca/diggindowntown.
What’s happening now
Crews have been installing signage and are getting ready to start Diggin’ Downtown. Starting Monday, March 14, Main Street will be fully closed from Lorne Street South to West Street. Work will be concentrated in the Main Street and Centre Street intersection. A detour is in effect for the next seven weeks.

Businesses in the closure area will remain open and accessible at all times. Pedestrian access throughout the downtown core is always open and encouraged, and signage will be in place to help pedestrians reach their destinations. Put a big sign in the west end near Mobile Marine no trucks local traffic only, can only wait to see a transport stuck on Lorne Street trying to turn on Minerva.
I think it would be a good idea to prepare and print a better map of the detour map and put a copy in everyone’s mail box.
