Madill Church Preservation Society receives major grant to help it move forward

The Board of the Madill Church Preservation Society (MCPS) is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a total funding amount of $99,550 from the Department of Canadian Heritage. The funding is a contribution to the Madill Church 150th Legacy Restoration Project and is provided through the department’s Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage Program, Legacy Fund component.

President Carolynn MacKay when announcing the decision said “I am absolutely thrilled with this news! With this funding and through our activities and the donations from generous supporters from the community and beyond we have raised over $225 000!”

“I salute and toast the volunteers of MCPS who have relentlessly donated countless hours of expertise and time to prevent the demolition of and restore this nationally significant historic site. Your success is now for all Canadians to celebrate,” said Rob Leverty, executive director of the Ontario Historical Society (OHS). MCPS was incorporated on November 18, 2017 under the OHS Special Act, 1899.

Since 2017, the MCPS has developed a fund-raising plan, participated in Community Events, hosted Open Houses and other community awareness events to assist with the goal of raising the funds required to pursue the restoration project.

This funding, along with an earlier $25,000 matching funds grant provided by the Town of Huntsville and funded through the Huntsville Municipal Accommodation Tax allows the MCPS to initiate the project and secure the specialized contractors required to restore this significant square log heritage building.
“Our plans include doing some immediate stabilization work on the building. This will happen this summer. We are developing a work project plan with the various contractors to determine the timing on the next steps required” says MacKay.

The MCPS is a registered charity whose goal is to “Protect and preserve a significant heritage site for present and future generations.” Once restored the church building will be available for family and community functions and events.

“We are proud to support the Madill Church Preservation Society’s 150th Legacy Restoration Project,” said the Minister of Canadian Heritage, Pablo Rodriguez. “We hope that the community of Huntsville will enjoy gathering with friends, family and community members in this historic building to enjoy heritage and arts. Special congratulations to all the volunteers who helped make this project possible.”
