Law students: applications are open for the fifth annual Mark’s Ride scholarship

Are you from Muskoka and going to law school in the fall? For the fifth year, Mark’s Ride is offering a scholarship for local students.

Mark’s Ride began in memory of Mark Reid, a local lawyer who loved his profession and loved cycling.

For the first three years of the event, family and friends held a charity ride in his name with proceeds going to a scholarship fund for local law students. Riders who participated were asked to make a donation to the fund.

Road construction along the planned route forced a change of plans in 2018, and a concert and silent auction were held instead.

That event enabled the scholarship committee to present two $3,500 scholarships prior to the 2019 school year to Miranda Wettlaufer-Stroud, who is attending Osgoode Law School, and Montana Brown, who is attending Lakehead University Law School.

The concert proved so popular that the organizing committee hosted a second concert in the fall of 2019 featuring local musicians Douglas McLean, Sean McIlroy and Jimmy Brendish, along with a barbecue and a silent auction. That night alone raised more than $7,000 for the scholarship fund.

Applications are now open for the 2020 scholarship, which will be presented in August to a local law student or students.

Applicants must be residents of Muskoka who are entering law school in September of this year or are currently enrolled in a law school, with studies in law continuing in September of this year.

To apply, email a letter of no longer than 600 words to [email protected] or [email protected] that describes yourself, your experiences, your hopes for the future, and your interests both in and outside of law.

The scholarship will be awarded to an applicant or applicants, at the scholarship committee’s sole discretion, who are most worthy based on the values Mark Reid found most important.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there will be no ride or concert this year. “We do intend to continue the scholarship in the coming years and will endeavour to get creative to raise funds for next year’s scholarship over the coming months,” says organizer Carrie Campbell.
