A Muskoka man’s struggles with alcohol have landed him behind bars.
Earlier this week in Bracebridge court, Matthew Flynn, 37, pleaded guilty to stealing a pick-up truck, driving with over 80 mg and stealing from the LCBO.
Court heard that on April 10, 2022, the Huntsville OPP received a call at 11:23 pm about an accident on Highway 11. Flynn had been driving a truck when he lost control and flipped it. When police arrived they found Flynn, injured and sitting by the roadside. He admitted to being drunk and was taken to the hospital for his injuries.
Blood samples found a blood/alcohol concentration of 191 mg per 100 ml of blood. Police later determined the truck had been stolen and Flynn was a suspended driver.
The court heard that earlier that same day Flynn visited the Huntsville LCBO and stole a bottle of Southern Comfort by putting it under his jacket. He returned later in the day and did the same thing again, court heard.
Flynn was ultimately sentenced to 105 days in jail, which he had already served in pre-trial custody, and a one-year driving ban.

Sad state of affairs! Leniency in the sentence, feel sorry for him, BUT, drinking and driving is a killer. There are people in this province that have been drunk behind the wheel and wiped out whole families, then a light sentence, then he is a model inmate, are walking the streets a free man, with a lenient sentence! Justice system should be revamped, DD and killing a person/whole families should be classed as murder! 25 years no parole!!! Then maybe something will change! When it hits close to you then people change their attitude! If my memory recalls correctly, Bob Rae’s in-laws where killed by a drunk driver, thats when things changed somewhat because it happened to someone in a position to do something about it!! Safe day to all first responders and those making it work!
I grew up with this gentleman, I wish you the best my friend!
I agree; our judicial system needs an overhaul as of yesterday! Unfortunately, our system is not up to par. Rehabilitation, for the most part, is a joke. Recidivism is high. People who commit offences need help – not condemnation. Upon completing their sentence /time, what supports are in place? What supports are in place whilst they are in prison? What supports are in place whilst awaiting their trial? Yes, I know, there are some…
To be clear, I do think that justice needs to be served.
Yeah I mean he’s obviously going through something, perhaps instead of name calling, we help these individuals, love time and some care goes a long way. ????
ONT COURTS ARE TOO LENIENT. 105 days is a joke.
judges need to visit cuba, where there is no crime, with strict laws, and no parol.
Bill, perhaps you meant “too”?
Anyway, the court was way too lenient with this, 105 days? That’s all? My goodness! Time for a judicial overhaul in this country, the courts have became way too soft.
Give this guy 2 years less a day, get him in some correctional programming, detox, etc. Not 3 months time served, what an absolute joke!
John possibly you meant “waste”.
Obviously some poor choices were made, but perhaps we shouldn’t be to judgemental.
Sorry, I meant to say what a moronic waist of space.
What a useless moronic waist of pace.
