Huntsville’s first Perogy-Fest is coming your way for a good cause

Huntsville’s first Perogy-Fest is sure to be a hit with local foodies.

The event is being put on by the Rotary Club of North Muskoka (formerly Rotary Club of Huntsville/Lake of Bays) in order to raise funds for at-risk youth in the community.

The club supports many initiatives in Huntsville including the helping hungry students project at Huntsville High School (hot nutritious meals 2 days a week), programmes at The Table, sending children to camp who are in foster care through Simcoe County Family Connections and other children’s programmes in town.

There are 20 members of the Rotary Club of North Muskoka and the idea for perogies came from one of their favourite traditions as a club. Each year the club is known for making Ukranian-style perogies from scratch and selling them as a fundraiser each spring.

“Making perogies is something that we’ve done together for years so when we were brainstorming and had the idea of turning it into its own fun event everyone was totally on board,” said president Cara Scheidel.

Schiedel became president in July 2019 and has been a part of the Rotary Club of North Muskoka for almost five years.

The event will be held on Saturday, September 28th, from 6 p.m. to midnight at the Active Living Centre (the back of the Summit Centre).

Tickets are $30 and each person gets 5 perogies, one sausage, coleslaw, sauerkraut, apple crisp, lemonade, and tea/coffee. Beer is also available for purchase.

The perogies are made with potato and cheese so vegetarians can have them as well.

“We’re known for our perogy fundraisers in town and we want this to be our own take on Oktoberfest,” said Schiedel.

The event will include a DJ, dancing, and a green screen with a perogy-fest themed background to take photos from the event that will be emailed to attendees.

For those who can’t get enough of the perogies, the club will be selling them frozen by the bag at the event so you can take some home.

“We can’t wait to bring the community together to enjoy good food, dancing, and fundraise for local children’s projects,” added Schiedel.

Tickets are available at Portage Promotions, Proactive Rehab, Colorworks and Soul Sistas. You can find out more about the club by clicking on this link.
