Huntsville attack leaves victim nearly blind

A man found himself under house arrest recently after admitting to a vicious beating in Huntsville that left the victim nearly blind.

Appearing in Bracebridge court, Jason Campbell, 59, of Toronto pleaded guilty to assault causing bodily harm.

Court heard that on Feb. 21, 2022, Campbell and another man who was known to him, became involved in an argument. At some point the augment spilled over and Campbell struck the victim in the face twice.

The victim later attended Huntsville District Memorial Hospital regarding extensive loss of vision and the police were contacted. The extent of the injuries was so severe that emergency surgery was needed in an effort to save the victim’s right eye.

A victim impact statement indicated he still has vision problems stemming from the incident.

After speaking with the victim, the police found Campbell waiting for a bus back to Toronto and he was arrested.

Court heard that Campbell has no previous criminal record

He was sentenced to a nine-month conditional sentence, consisting of 4.5 months of house arrest and another 4.5 months under curfew.

House arrest and another 4.5 months under curfew perhaps will do little, if anything, in terms of rehabilitation. Clearly, this offender needs extensive support; otherwise, quite likely, he will reoffend. Our system is broken on many levels.

To be clear: I am not excusing the behaviour, nor am I suggesting that there shouldn’t be consequences.

What a joke of a sentence. When will these morons get jail time for their offensives and not just a slap on the wrist. Pathetic!
