There’s nothing quite like the sound of children singing to lift spirits and make the holidays just a little bit brighter.
Students in the Huntsville Public School choir—the HPS Singers—spent several hours sharing their talents with the community at stops throughout Huntsville’s core on Dec. 14.
After a stop at Town Hall to serenade Main St. passersby, they walked to Fairvern Nursing Home for a surprise mini-concert for residents and staff who gathered at the home’s windows to enjoy the sounds of the season. Their joy created within the residence was evident in their smiles and waves.
From there, the choir headed to Music on Main to wrap up their tour.
The choir comprises 25 to 30 students and is open to all grades. They rehearse two to three times per week, either during recess or after school.
“We decided to take our voices around the town because we know that residents at Fairvern Nursing Home and other places like it can find this time of year especially difficult,” said Jolene Martin, choir director and SK/grade 1 teacher at the school. “The pandemic has made it even more difficult as these people most likely have been not able to see family or loved ones. We wanted to bring them a tiny glimpse of love and joy during this time through the gift of song.”

The choir will be adding to its repertoire in 2022, and hopes that the performances will be enjoyed by a live audience once they can do so safely.
“If not, we will record the songs and create a virtual choir performance, to be shared via Youtube or a similar platform,” noted Martin.
