Edge of the Woods Theatre wants local youth to learn professional theatre production skills. Its upcoming Out of the Box training program is geared toward young people aged 14 to 21 who want to pursue a performing arts career.
Participants will learn the basics of lighting, sound, projection, rigging, and more. Anyone who has attended past Nuit Blanche North festivals (which is on hiatus for 2016) will be familiar with the creative ways these skills can be used.
“We want to start building interest locally and grow these skills here,” said Dan Watson from Edge of the Woods Theatre, adding that professionals often have to be brought in from elsewhere because the needed skills aren’t available in the Huntsville area. “It’s free, it’s open to anyone, no experience necessary, and we encourage local youth to come out and try it.” The eight-session program, held over four weeks in July, will be taught by professionals and will culminate in a celebratory dance party.
Out of the Box is funded in part by Theatre Ontario’s Youth Theatre Training Program via the Ontario Arts Council.
For younger children, aged 8 to 12, Edge of the Woods Theatre is also offering a five-day drama camp from July 4-8, which ends with a short performance on the Studio Theatre stage.
