The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry – Parry Sound District is advising area residents that a Flood Warning is in effect for the Muskoka River watershed.
A Flood Watch is in effect for the remainder of the Parry Sound District which includes Muskoka, Parry Sound and a north-west portion of the County of Haliburton.
Water levels and flows in local lakes and rivers are expected to rise following significant rainfall forecasted across the area beginning this evening. Total rainfall may reach 40 to 70 mm in some locales before the rain tapers to showers on the weekend. Water levels in all area lakes, rivers and streams are expected to rise to or above typical spring levels as a result of the rain.
Vulnerable low-lying roads and properties along the Big East River in the Town of Huntsville may begin to be impacted as river flows once again increase. It is expected that lower-lying portions of known flood-prone roads along river courses may be impacted to various degrees over the weekend and into early next week.
South Branch Muskoka River flows have risen above the lower warning thresholds and are expected to continue to climb if the forecasted rain materializes. Flows in the North Branch Muskoka River within the Town of Bracebridge may reach early flood-watch levels as flows continue to rise over the next few days.
Flows out of Lake Muskoka into the Bala Reach continue to remain above flood warning levels of 280 cms. Flows in the Moon River/Bala Reach will increase as levels in Lake Muskoka rise.
