While the long weekend kept the Huntsville/Lake of Bays Fire Department busy, the most significant call came related to a fire at the Muskoka Bible Centre in Huntsville on Sunday, May 19, at approximately 11 a.m.
Plumes of smoke could be seen from Brunel Road and other parts of town.
Deputy Fire Chief Paul Calleja said three fire stations responded to the event, which lasted about two hours. The good news is that no injuries were reported, but two trailers burned down, and others were impacted. He said only one of the trailers had occupants, but they managed to evacuate safely.
“We’ve investigated, and we came back with an undetermined, unfortunately,” explained Calleja regarding what may have caused the fire.
“The Fire Department’s Fire Prevention Division conducted a recent fire safety inspection of Muskoka Bible Centre grounds and the property had made improvements to emergency planning and maintenance of fire protection equipment as a result. The staff of the campground did an excellent job guiding fire trucks to the fire scene which assisted in locating the fire quickly.
“The Fire Department reminds seasonal residents to check their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms by ensuring they are not expired, the batteries are not dead and the device sounds when the test button is pressed when opening their cottage or trailer,” according to the Fire Department.
