Submitted by the Downtown Huntsville BIA

The Huntsville Business Improvement Area (BIA) is proud to celebrate the 50th anniversary of BIAs by hosting a BIA Day on September 16th, 2020 in Downtown Huntsville.

On September 16, 1970, Bloor West Village BIA in Toronto became the first BIA in the world!

Fast forward to 2020, and there are now more than 300 BIAs in Ontario, a growing list. Across Canada there are 500 BIAs (or their equivalent) and the idea has also spread worldwide, with BIAs (or their equivalents) in more than 10 countries around the world, such as the US, UK, Scotland, Germany, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, China, and India.

“BIAs are integral to advancing distinct, livable, vibrant and resilient business community in Ontario and beyond, and arguably Ontario’s (Toronto’s) greatest export,” says Kay Matthews, Executive Director of Ontario Business Improvement Area Association (OBIAA). “We’re excited to see the idea spread and OBIAA strives to be pivotal in building capacity of our BIAs by providing a platform for sharing their wonderful ideas and best practices amongst our BIAs.”

Join the Huntsville BIA on September 16 from 12-2 p.m. at the Town Hall steps for cupcakes and downtown dollar giveaways! First come, first serve— while quantities last. Please adhere to social distancing measures.

“The Huntsville BIA, formed in 1979, proudly celebrating 41 years alongside this 50-year milestone,” says Morgan Richter, Downtown Huntsville BIA manager. “Our BIA adds vitality to our community by ensuring beautification and cultural experiences. Working together with local businesses, community members and the Town of Huntsville we host events, promote our local economy, and do our best to create a welcoming destination for our local and tourist population. We are currently planning for a Downtown Revitalization in 2021—an exciting opportunity for rebranding and fresh ideas!”

The Huntsville BIA’s mission is to serve its members, visitors, and the community by creating experiences, events, and memories that draw people to our downtown. The BIA strives to build a dynamic, vibrant, and welcoming downtown that is the heart of Huntsville for our guests and the community.
