COVID outbreak in Huntsville hospital’s east wing declared over, while south wing remains in outbreak

Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare (MAHC), in consultation with the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit, has declared the COVID-19 outbreak on East Wing at Huntsville District Memorial Hospital (HDMH) Site over.

The outbreak lasted 19 days, and through outbreak management protocols including testing, 11 patient cases and five staff cases were attributed to the outbreak in total.

East Wing unit has reopened to admissions as well as visitors, in line with MAHC’s visitation policy, currently at Phase 2 to allow two visitors per day between visiting hours of 10 a.m. and 8 p.m.

South Wing at the HDMH Site remains in outbreak at this time with no visiting permitted except for in approved special circumstances, such as essential caregiver and palliative end-of-life patients.

Please forgive my lack of knowledge on this topic but when you walk into the hospital at the main entrance I would have guessed that to the right would be roughly North and to the left would be South.
I am thus left not really knowing what they call the each wing. I’d take a guess that left is South and somehow right is North but that leaves East lost in the shuffle.

I do not recall seeing signs to designate the various directions of each wing but then I am only there very occasionally and usually I’m kind of worried about things like blood leaking out of me.

Huntsville seems to have this issue as a town too. The “West End being the south end of town and then the part past the hospital being the “north Huntsville” area.

West Road does indeed head off in a generally westerly direction until it crosses Hwy 11 and becomes Ravenscliffe Rd.

The main street starts off as “main street west”, changes to “main street east at about Center street and then, after you cross that lovely metal bridge it becomes “King William Street” and again, after you cross Hwy 60 you are suddenly on “Muskoka Rd. 3 North” It is, or appears to the visitor to be “all one road” which I’m sure has confused a lot of people.

Then they like to overlay road names and numbers so all the variety of names are actually Muskoka 3 if you talk to the District but go by various other names along the way.

I’ve always wondered at this, and it is by no means unique to Huntsville.

It does not make much difference if you live here as you probably figured it out years ago but for visitors looking for a particular address things could be made a little clearer.

I sort of got off on this tangent while I was using up the 12 hours spent in Emergency the other night. I may not know if Emergency is north, south or east but I’m glad it is there and wish to thank all the staff who worked on me. Emergency could be a bit of a synonym for “confusion” but in the end they always seem to sort things out and I would not be without them no matter what anyone likes to call them. It is a difficult job that never ends and as I say, I appreciate each and every visit I have had to make, even if sometimes it seems to take a long time. I just remind myself that I am sitting there thinking about “Me” while the staff is trying to think about “everyone in their care” and prioritize accordingly and above all get things as “right” as one can in a small hospital with not enough staff at 3 AM

    Thanks!
