Good thoughts, Andrea. “Getting a grip” on our emotions with the use of sound reasoning and judgment is the God-given antidote to “running-around-with-our-hair-on-fire”. In ancient Israel, the Israelites were expected to rein in their emotions by the use of brain power–the way of success. The prophet Isaiah, seven centuries before Christ, advised, “Come, let us reason together.” The Israelites believed that only pagans were held captive by every whim of emotion. One suspects that is why the Israelites were given extravagant levels of authority in pagan nations like Egypt, Babylon and Persia. These teachings were reinforced in the New Testament which tells us, “…for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.” (2 Timothy 1:7-8) Our Bible-informed, Christian ancestors faced great dangers when they came to this continent–many with only the clothes on their backs. Reading many of their accounts boggles the mind as to how they even survived, let alone prevailed. And yet they did prevail–no doubt often with the help and cooperation of the indigenous people.
I saw an amusing meme the other day, on the subject of coping with our current self-isolation: “Our grandparents and great-grandparents were called to struggle through the terrible economic times of the Great Depression and then they were called to the horrific circumstances of World War II. I think we can handle being called to sitting at home in our living rooms.”

What I didn’t say in my first reply..
was I have been texting and calling vulnerable people I personally know…
to encourage and support them because they are going through areas in their life that magnifies anxieties and fear ! Their time through this triggers them! So I believe our choices are important for ourselves individually and with compassion for those in our lives who are having a harder time daily!
Thank You
