Mary Spring and Terri Howell received a Pay it Forward Grant through the District of Muskoka’s Community Grant program. Their proposal was to teach children and adults how to sew. They have received grants in earlier years, which has allowed them to purchase eight computerized sewing machines as well as all of the materials required to sew. The goals of the Community Grant Program are to:
- Support a healthy, vibrant community
- Build community capacity and leadership
- Creatively problem-solve to fill a community need
- Foster volunteerism and encourage community engagement
Spring and Howell strongly believe that all children benefit from learning how to use a sewing machine and being creative with their projects. Over the years they have offered workshops for children and adults—all free of charge!
COVID-19, as well as recent respiratory illness concerns, prevented them from hosting workshops for two years. However, they are feeling prepared to begin their programs again with safety in mind. The workshops will be limited to ten people. The sewing machine and workspaces will be spread out so that participants will have room to work safely. Masks are encouraged.
The children’s workshop will be held on Saturday December 10th from 10 am to 4 pm at the Huntsville Public Library. Children between the ages of 9-14 will receive basic sewing instruction and create Christmas postcards.
The adult workshop will be held on Saturday December 17th from 10 am to 4 pm at the Huntsville Public Library. Adults will receive basic instruction on the machines and sew a Christmas tree to hang on a door.
Both of the workshops are free of charge. All materials will be provided. Participants are asked to bring their own lunch. As well, Howell and Spring are asking that participants not enroll if they are unwell. They are hoping to keep everyone healthy for Christmas! Future workshops will be held in the New Year on PD Days.

Wow! We have had a terrific response to our sewing workshops for children. Both classes on December 10th are full with a growing wait list.
There is still lots of room in the adult class on December 17th.
More classes will be organized on PD days in 2023.
