Art Fx is a year-long series on Huntsville Doppler featuring Huntsville-area visual artists.

“Stubb’s Falls” by Sylvia Kerschl is a 24″ x 36″ acrylic painting.

“My dog and I share walks regularly at Arrowhead Park since moving here. So of course, I was inspired by the landscape for several of my paintings, this being one!” says Sylvia. “The reference photo was taken by my daughter on one of these treks, as I am terrified of heights, and couldn’t make it down the open stairs!”

About the artist

I am a self-taught artist. Inspired by what surrounds me seems cliché, but is certainly an understatement. I am very textural with my paintings as I am drawn to nature in those forms. The angular strength of rock, the misshapen beauty of trees and the softness of the underbrush on the forest floor.

I specifically now draw my inspiration from the Muskoka landscape where I have just recently made my home. Over time, as I have developed my own style, I attempt to impress images with my palette knife or brush, sometimes believing that could just be impatience on my part! Needless to say, the impressionist group of painters has had a large influence on my love of art.

Recently retired from the corporate world, I have now been given the opportunity to rekindle and pursue my passion.

Sylvia is the newest board member of the Huntsville Art Society. One of her beautiful pieces is presently hanging in our Members show in Partners Hall at the Algonquin Theatre. I love her work! We are so blessed to have this talented artist in Huntsville.
