Cool gadgets rule at Youth Tech Extravaganza

The annual Youth Tech Extravaganza, held October 18 at Huntsville Public Library as part of Muskoka Small Business Week, drew kids young and old to check out the technology available at the library and beyond. There were robots thanks to Huntsville High School’s Hoya Robotics team, 3D pens and printers, an app that brings colouring pages to life, and games galore. Doppler checked out the fun. Here’s some of what we found:

Did you know that you can make your colouring come to life? With the Quiver app, trucks drive, penguins play hockey and a pumpkin transforms into a jack-o-lantern on screen. See how it works in the video below. (Thanks for the demo, Kristen Moller!)

There was more 3D fun to be had with Cubelets which are robotic blocks that introduce kids to building robots, and 3Doodler pens that can be used to draw in three dimensions. The MakerBot 3D printer was working away to make a stormtrooper helmet as a giveaway. You can even bring in your own .STL files and make your own 3D prints – they cost just two dollars plus five cents per minute. See the MakerBot in action below the photo gallery.

The Hoya Robotics team was on hand with their robot Valkyrie for people to test drive, along with smaller robots Dot and Dash. And Sphero, an app-enabled ball, was ready for play.

The library’s green screen was in action to insert photos of kids onto fun backgrounds. And the game stations – Wii and Minecraft – were a big hit with everyone.

If you were there, tell us what you had the most fun with!
