More than 150 young ski racers descended on the Muskoka Ski Club at Hidden Valley Highlands Ski Area last weekend for the Southern Ontario Division U10/U12 Championships. The event included a GS (Giant Slalom) race on Saturday, March 19, a banquet and entertainment at Hidden Valley Resort Saturday night, and a Slalom race on Sunday.

Justin Caswell was the top placing Muskoka Ski Club racer at the event, skiing to a fifth place finish in both of his races which landed him in fourth place overall.

“I thought I was going to come fifth but another skier didn’t do as well in his second race so that’s how I got fourth. It felt good,” says Justin who said he prefers GS (Giant Slalom) over Slalom races “because the turns are easier. They are bigger and it’s easier to get to the next gate.” But mostly, he says he just really likes being able to hang out with his friends after the races.

Even though the race was at the home club where he trains, this was the first time Justin has raced on the run where the Slalom was held, making his fifth place finish all the more impressive.

With the racing season over, Justin will turn his attention to playing lacrosse and soccer and spending the summer waterskiing.

Combined results for all of the Muskoka Ski Club racers were:

U10 Female
26th Alayna Heinz
27th Cadence Montgomery
31st Madeleine Armstrong

U10 Male
4th Justin Caswell
25th Nolan Caswell
38th Tobin Spiers
40th Thomas Evis

U12 Female
19th Julia Caswell
29th Grace Dalton
32nd Victoria Knight

U12 Male

39th William Evis

Hidden Valley Highlands Ski Area will be open for one more day of skiing this season on Saturday, March 26, which includes their annual year-end Dress Up Day and Pancake Breakfast. This year’s Puddle Jump has been cancelled.
