Plans moving forward for a new outdoor skating facility in Novar

Plans to replace Novar’s outdoor skating rink are moving forward.

Perry council has been discussing what they’d like to see in terms of the replacement of the existing deteriorating rink for approximately four years. Perry Township Treasurer Kim Seguin said that with the change in climate and the outdoor rink being highly dependent on weather in the past couple of years, the number of days that the rink has been available for skating has been decreasing. “That’s why council is looking at putting in the ice plant structure,” she noted, adding that it will help increase outdoor skating days for the community.

The existing rink is more than 40 years old, and plans are in the works to create a new 60×130 foot multi-use rink and covered facility on the site of the existing rink at 54 Mccrandle Street. The covered area will include washrooms and change rooms. The new rink and structure will also facilitate off-season recreation such as pickleball, ball hockey and even an outdoor market, explained Seguin.

Work on the estimated $4 million project is expected to begin this summer, and staff are hoping for completion in November. The municipality plans to move forward with a tender process and start construction in June. Debenture funding has been secured through Infrastructure Ontario, and any additional grants the municipality is able to secure will help reduce what it has to debenture for in the long run, explained Seguin.

“We’re excited about it. We’ve had a lot of positive feedback. There’s been a few people who have been negative, but for the most part, it’s been positive. It’s just going to be a great asset to the community,” said Seguin.
