Vi McQuain celebrates her 103rd birthday in style

Vi McQuain, a long time (very long time) Huntsville resident, celebrated her 103rd birthday on December 14 with a trip to Casino Rama.

Residents and staff at Rogers Cove Retirement residence, where Vi now lives, gathered to sing happy birthday as they escorted her to a waiting black stretch limousine. Vi was in great spirits, joking that she didn’t have any money to spend at the casino and asking people for a dime.

Vi was ready to party, impeccably dressed in Christmas red; maybe a good-luck colour at the roulette table?

The secret to living a long life, Vi says with a laugh, is being a good person. When she stops laughing, she admits that working and staying busy has kept her going.

Vi Coker was born near Bracebridge but moved to Huntsville when she was about four. Vi comes from a family of 14 children. She is the eldest. She says there was always a baby to mind.

When she and Alvin McQuain married they had three children of their own. Vi kept busy taking care of her family, entertaining and volunteering. She was a member of the Rebekkah’s, a founding member of Community Policing, a founding member of Club 55, and a Meals on Wheels volunteer. When the kids got a little bit older, Vi took a job at Sears and eventually became the manager. Those who know Vi know that she has been a going concern, and a go-getter, for her whole life.

Her birthday celebration was arranged by staff who learned of Vi’s desire to visit the casino. To make it extra special they contacted Hammond Transportation about hiring a limousine. When the company heard of the milestone birthday they offered their services for $103; one dollar for every year Vi has celebrated her birthday.

Regardless of how Vi makes out at the slot machines at Rama, we think she would agree that she has been pretty lucky in life.
