Every year, the Kiwanis Club of Huntsville Muskoka gives out two scholarships to deserving youth in the community.
A scholarship is awarded annually in memory of the late Brenda Wainman Goulet. she was a graduate of Ontario College of Art & Design and over
a career spanning 30 years was recognized as a celebrated sculptor of international acclaim, a founding member of the Artists of the Limberlost, member of Muskoka Autumn Studio Tour (MAST) as well as the Huntsville Festival of the Arts.
The scholarship in her memory is awarded to a graduating student taking visual arts, who will continue in the arts at a post-secondary institution. The recipient is selected by the Visual Arts Department at Huntsville High School. The selection is based on the student’s body of work over their secondary school career, having been acknowledged as having a superior gift of expression and artistic flair. The funds will be assigned to the student’s selected post-secondary studies
at a recognized institution.
This year the award went to Huntsville High School graduate Chloe Punkari who has been on the honour roll throughout high school. She is also the recipient of True Sport Award Senior Female Athlete and Female Leadership in Sport Award, and recipient of the Kimberly-Clark Bright Futures Scholarship. She is enrolled in the University of Toronto for Architectural Studies and is the recipient of $1,000 from the Brenda Wainman Goulet Scholarship presented by the Kiwanis.
The Club also gives out an annual Volunteer Appreciation Scholarship to acknowledge the tangible impact youth can have on the community by serving beyond themselves and providing ongoing and meaningful altruistic volunteerism. The funds will be assigned to the student’s selected post-secondary studies at a recognized institution.
This year the scholarship went to Huntsville High School graduate Patrick Ferrier who completed over 100 volunteer hours during the past four years, even through the COVID pandemic, including washing dishes at summer camps, coaching soccer, and serving on the leadership team of his church youth group. Ferrier also serves his school community as part of the Huntsville High School Leadership Council and this year walked with his family on the Coldest Night of the Year to raise funds for The Table Soup Kitchen Foundation.
He has accepted an offer to study Political Science and History at the University of Ottawa and intends to continue his studies in Education or Law. He also plans to participate in a short-term mission trip in 2023.
