TULLOCH Engineering, a multi-disciplinary consulting firm made up of engineers, surveyors, and biologists, has added land use planning to its expertise with the recent acquisition of planning consultants Wayne Simpson and Associates.
In a joint letter, the representatives of both companies described the acquisition as an exciting event for both their employees as well as their clients. “TULLOCH and WSA have worked together frequently in the past and share the same values and commitment to excellent client service,” stated TULLOCH CEO Mark Tulloch and senior planner Wayne Simpson.
“WSA has been a leader in the provision of land use planning and development services in the Muskoka region and beyond for many years. This will provide a strong complement to TULLOCH’s breadth of expertise in engineering, geomatics and environmental services. Together, the combined companies offer comprehensive, integrated consulting services to the land development industry and we look forward to expanding our service offerings to WSA’s existing clients,” it states. “As a part of TULLOCH, Wayne Simpson will continue to provide leadership to the WSA team and you can continue to rely upon the same personal working relationships and quality of work that you have had in the past. We are grateful for the strong relationships we’ve established with our clients and look forward to the exciting opportunities ahead,” it adds.
Simpson and his team will be working within TULLOCH’s planning department and will be located at TULOCH’s Main Street office.
“Our services will be more comprehensive,” said Simpson in a video interview provided by TULLOCH staff. “There’s an opportunity for us to do more together,” he added.
When asked what he looks forward to the most about joining TULLOCH, Simpson said: “The economy has been so strong of recent. I’ve been doing this for more than 30 years in Muskoka and this reminds me of the economy in the late 89, 90s, type of thing, when it was really everybody with a pickup truck was a contractor and people were doing things all over the place. There was a lot happening and there’s a lot happening now,” said Simpson. “And it’s a real opportunity to sort of influence… development going forward. I don’t want to sit in the sidelines and watch other people do these things. I want to get involved but, on the other hand, we have limitations as to what we can do as an organization because we are small.”
Simpson said with TULLOCH, he looks forward to being able to offer integrated services for different projects. “When I look back over 30 years and I think of all the projects I’ve been involved in there are really none that I’m not proud of in terms of the product or the ultimate product, and I wanna keep it that way.” He said planning consultants cannot tell a developer what to do but they do have a role in influencing development. “The reality is it shapes this community. We live in this community and we want to be proud of it so I think TULLOCH, their skill sets, the human resources they bring forward, and the attitude of those people is what’s really making me excited,” said Simpson who also noted that he looks forward to working in more of a mentorship role and sharing his years of planning experience.
Mark Tulloch said what his organization gains by having Wayne Simpson and his team join them is the ability to build a one-stop shop model for the organization, particularly for land development projects. He said they’ve seen that model successfully used in TULLOCH’s Sudbury and Hamilton operations. “For the past number of years, we’ve had lots of engineering abilities internally. We have civil engineers, structural engineers, environmental engineers, technical engineers–all here in Huntsville. We have a very broad survey group right here in Huntsville, what we lack is planning. And so with Wayne and his team joining us that really does make it a one-stop shop for land development,” he said, adding that the expansion will be a benefit to both existing and future clients.
