Bella & Rebecca Lakes: Spotlight on Cottage Life

There’s nothing like cottage life around the Muskoka region. Our widespread, natural setting has been a draw for generations of residents and visitors looking for that someplace special to call home. Our love of nature has fostered a long-standing approach of conservation; part of what makes this area so unique are the pristine natural features which our communities take pride in caring for. This can be readily experienced and understood with some time spent around Bella and Rebecca Lakes.

The Big East River may be our lifeline to the world, but Muskoka lakes are our anchors. Life around our lakes is more than just a getaway from the hustle and bustle of city life, it’s a place where communities are formed with people who care about the place they live, and the people who live there. One look at the closely connected Bella and Rebecca Lake communities will show you how true this is.

More than 40 years ago the Mabel Hart Brook & Marion Hill Memorial Foundation was established by local residents with the desire to ensure the conservation of the Bella Rebecca Lake area. Lakeside living is in high demand around the Muskoka region, and while we have hundreds of lakes, beach access is at a premium. The rugged territory here has resulted in beautiful shorelines, but with a limited number of beaches. It was the desire to protect one of the best stretches of beach in the region, a 3,100-foot-long area known as Bella or Foundation Beach, which spearheaded the idea of establishing the Foundation.

The goal was to not only protect the land from being over-developed through environmental stewardship, but to also keep the land accessible for everyone. The result has been over 400 acres of preserved land along Bella Lake, where people can experience the beauty and quiet of the region with hiking trails, or along the beautiful sandy beach. Being similar in geography to Algonquin Park, this area just north of Huntsville off Limberlost Rd (District Road 8), is an ideal place for nature lovers to immerse themselves in the serenity of lakeside living.

While the focus of the Foundation has been to protect the lands along and near the beach on Bella Lake, there is also a focus on community, which is brought together with annual events such as the Bella/Rebecca Regatta, the main summer event. With live music, games such as beach volleyball and canoe races, alongside sailing and waterskiing, this is the showcase event for the year and goes far to help support the continuing efforts of the Foundation. There’s also regular beach clean-ups done by community volunteers to ensure the shoreline continues as a clean and healthy lakeside habitat.

Both Bella Lake and Rebecca Lake are ideal places for anyone who loves to fish. The main catch is lake trout, which you can fish for year-round. Other main species of fish include smallmouth bass, brook trout, burbot and lake whitefish. The best way to get around these lakes is by small fishing boat, which can readily be launched into Bella Lake from a launch off of Fieldale Rd. The two lakes are interconnected – for those with small enough boats, there’s a bridge underpass which will take you from one lake to the other.

While development has been closely watched and done with assurances of sustaining the natural beauty of both Bella Lake and Rebecca Lake, there are cottages available in the area. Four MLS recorded sales were completed in 2017, ranging between $539,900 – $860,000 as well as some private property transfers, reaching upwards of $1 million. The cottages along Bella Lake and Rebecca Lake are highly prized for their location as much as for their connection to a community which cares. If you’re looking for the ideal lakeside cottage, this could be the just the area for you.

One of the best ways to experience cottage living is to experience life along our Muskoka region lakes. If you want to learn more about what makes life so special here, you can talk with Sandra directly at this year’s Spring Cottage Life show being held in Toronto on March 22nd – 25th. We’d love to have you stop by our booth, just to chat, ask some questions and discover more about the beauty and wonder of cottage life around Muskoka.
