Anglo Canadian Leather Company Band (1915-1926) Herbert L. Clarke (left) leader and C.O. Shaw (right) owner of the Anglo Canadian Leather Company, Huntsville, Ontario.

Herbert L. Clarke was considered the greatest cornet soloist in North America. He was born in Massachusetts but moved with his family to Toronto in 1880, where he became an accomplished musician. He was assistant director with John Philip Sousa’s band when C.O. Shaw invited him to Huntsville to hear the Anglo-Canadian Leather Company band. He signed a contract to become leader of the band in 1918 and continued with the band until 1923. He helped to make the band famous across North America. He was replaced temporarily by Frank S. Welsman, formerly director of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, to conduct the band at the Canadian National Exhibition that year. In September 1926, the band was disbanded.

Muskoka Digital Archives is a project of the Huntsville Public Library and Bracebridge Public Library in cooperation with the Muskoka Parry Sound Genealogy Group.
