The Door Youth Centre got some help from the Huntsville Firefighters’ Association at their final free lunch of the year, as well as a donation to the program.
For the past two years, The Door, which is located on Brunel Road not far from the high school, has provided a free BBQ lunch for students, with more than 80 kids turning up each time.
“Thanks seems so little for people who gave financially towards this weekly event so we want to say a huge appreciation for your donations,” said Dave Wyville, one of the organizers of the twice-weekly lunch along with Carol Watson and James Hunt, Director of The Door.
Food donations come from Moose Delaney’s and an anonymous bread supplier, and Sunbelt Rentals donates propane for the barbecue.
A few weeks ago, some local firefighters offered to cook the final lunch of the school year on Friday, June 14.
“Even though it’s the end of the year, we look forward to coming back next year and volunteering,” said President of the Huntsville Firefighters’ Association, Jeremy Alldred-Hughes. “It’s such a great program in our community and we’re happy to help out.”
Alldred-Hughes also presented Hunt with a $200 cheque for the program.
Although the lunch program is over for the year, The Door will still be offering their Friday night drop-in throughout the summer, as well as other events you can find out about on their website or social media channels.
All of The Door’s funding comes from private donations, so they are always looking for community support. Both grocery store gift cards and monetary donations are welcome. Contact James Hunt at [email protected] or visit huntsvilleyfc.ca.
