The 14th annual Hike for Hospice returns on Sunday, May 7

On Sunday, May 7, 2023, Huntsville/Lake of Bays/Almaguin Highlands will join thousands of people across Canada, as they come together in order to raise funds for hospice palliative care programs and services. This event will bring many of us together who have shared the journey through end of life with a loved one. It is a chance to remember and celebrate.

Many people have found that walking in memory of those they have lost is a positive and meaningful experience. New traditions created in their honour recognize the impact our loved ones have had on our lives and celebrate their unique contributions to family, friends, their workplace and community.

Hike for Hospice is the largest fundraiser for Hospice Huntsville. The event has a goal of raising $50,000, with 100 per  cent of the funds staying in the community.

Funds raised for the Hike come from sponsorship, pledges, and hike-specified events such as the Purple Boot Campaign and Lake of Bays Garden Centre’s Tulip Fundraiser. “Purple Boot trophies” will be awarded to the top individual and top fundraising teams.

The Hike will have a musical component again this year. Local musicians will be performing at River Mill Park and playing along the 1km and 3.4km hike routes.

We are tremendously grateful to all of our event sponsors, including our Signature Sponsor Muskoka Medical and Campus Trail Remedy’s Rx Pharmacies. Thank you to our sponsors for their continued commitment to end-of-life care in our community.

“This year marks the 14th annual Hike for Hospice and volunteers, event sponsors and staff are excited to again host an in-person hike. The Hike for Hospice is a time to remember and celebrate loved ones, share in the community of Hospice  and to fundraise for a continued presence in the communities we serve both in community supports and the residential hospice,” said Tracy Badger, Hospice Huntsville Signature Events and Residential Volunteer Coordinator.

To operate the Algonquin Grace Residential Hospice, Hospice Huntsville needs to raise over $1,800 each and every day.  Each year, Algonquin Grace receives funding that supports 40% of the annual operating budget. The remaining 60% of operating costs must be fundraised each year. These funds support our 5 residential hospice beds as well as visiting hospice services and grief and bereavement services in both one-to-one and group settings. The organization hosts fundraising events throughout the year to help generate these funds along with many other giving initiatives.

Every dollar raised stays in our community to directly offset the operational costs of Hospice Huntsville and allow comprehensive end-of-life care to people and their families/caregivers in our community, completely free of charge.

About Hospice Huntsville:

Hospice Huntsville provides quality end-of-life care for members of our community who are living with a life-limiting  illness. The organization provides extended support for family members/caregivers. Hospice Huntsville has been providing palliative care support to our community since 1989. Our visiting volunteer program provides bedside support in our client’s homes, at Algonquin Grace Residential Hospice, or at the hospital. This service will allow family and caregiver respite. The grief and bereavement program supports families and caregivers after their loved one has died. Algonquin Grace Residential Hospice welcomed their first hospice residents in January 2012. The beautiful five-bed residential hospice provides 24-hour professional, compassionate nursing and personal support.

Hospice Huntsville is a registered charity that relies on community support to raise approximately 60% of their annual operating costs; in order to offer our much-needed programs and services free of charge to hospice residents, their families  and members of our community.
