The 1 1/2 annual Sunrise Swim for Hospice raised more than $3,000 for Hospice Huntsville this morning. The first event was at the 2015 Ironman Muskoka and as this year’s swim is associated with the Ironman 70.3 Muskoka – at half the distance – that makes it the 1 1/2 annual swim, joked Rich Trenholm from TriMuskoka. The club hosted the event in collaboration with Hospice Huntsville.
Ninety-two athletes who are registered in the Sunday, July 9 Ironman 70.3 rose early on Saturday morning to test the waters in Fairy Lake and see what they’re in for during the race. It’s a relaxed event, with swimmers sidling up to the NyDock floating coffee bar post-swim to chill with a Muskoka Roastery coffee. Twenty-five volunteers provided support both in the water and on land, including serving up breakfast that included pastries from Henrietta’s Pine Bakery.
“It was an incredible event. So much fun,” said Trenholm. “With the race being in the downtown core now – which we hope it’s going to be a tradition to continue on with the long-standing history of triathlon in our area – we hope that this swim can be an annual event before the 70.3 and continue to grow.”
