A family from Sprucedale is beginning the difficult process of rebuilding after a devastating house fire destroyed their home and claimed the lives of their three beloved pets.
According to family friend Danielle Lafontaine Beverdam, the fire broke out on June 28 at approximately 9:30 p.m., leaving Becca and Spencer Redman, along with their children, three-year-old Elsie and seven-month-old Lochran, without a home or their belongings.
The local fire department reportedly arrived within 10 minutes of the emergency call, but the fire spread so rapidly that little could be saved. Lafontaine Beverdam said the fire chief was surprised by how quickly the blaze consumed the home.
During the fire, Spencer made repeated attempts to rescue the family’s pets, re-entering the smoke-filled house several times and even kicking down closed doors in hopes their animals would escape. However, thick black smoke quickly overwhelmed the home, forcing him to retreat and wait for firefighters to arrive.
The family lost their three pets—cats Merlin and Dinah, and their dog Berli—in the fire.
“Anyone who knows Becca and Spencer knows how deeply they loved their animals,” Lafontaine Beverdam wrote in a GoFundMe she organized for her friends. “Merlin and Dinah, their sweet cats, and Berli, their big gentle boy who loved treats, they were so much more than pets—they were family.”
While grateful that the family escaped safely, Lafontaine Beverdam said they are now facing the overwhelming task of starting over.
The fire destroyed nearly all of their possessions, leaving them in need of clothing, diapers, formula, baby supplies, furniture, household items and temporary housing.
“As parents to a three-year-old and a seven-month-old, their focus should be on comforting their children and taking one day at a time, not worrying about how they’ll replace the necessities of everyday life,” she said.
Lafontaine Beverdam, who has been friends with Becca since kindergarten and also knows Spencer from elementary school, described the couple as generous, hardworking people who are always willing to help others.
“If there’s one thing I know about Becca and Spencer, it’s that they are the kind of people who would drop everything to help someone else,” she wrote. “They are generous, caring, hardworking, and would never be the first to ask for help. That’s why I’m asking for them.”
A fundraising campaign has been launched to help the family cover immediate expenses and begin rebuilding their lives. Donations of any amount, as well as sharing the fundraiser, will help provide much-needed support during the difficult weeks ahead.
Lafontaine Beverdam said the family is deeply grateful for the outpouring of kindness from the community as they mourn both the loss of their home and the cherished pets who were an important part of their family.
“We will always remember Merlin, Dinah, and Berli—three cherished members of their family who filled their home with unconditional love and whose memories will live on forever,” she wrote.
