It was chilly Saturday morning when a small group of people set out for a walk to support the local branch of Ostomy Canada Society.
Carol Gibson, president of Ostomy Muskoka, organized a walk to raise funds and awareness on ostomy. She says ostomy is not a familiar word to many. It’s a surgery to create an opening from the inside of the body, often the bladder or bowel, to the outside. It is often a subject people are not comfortable talking about but needs to be.
This year’s theme for the walk was Many Stories, One Voice. Five people came out to support the event, which started at the Canada Summit Centre. They took a hike up to Lions’ Lookout and then headed downtown.
“Because of the theme, we wanted to walk around town and look at the stories behind some of the (Group of Seven) murals and tie that in. It’s a bit cold but if we walk fast we’ll stay warm.”

Doris Macdonald, left, treasurer of the local branch of the Ostomy Canada Society, and Carol Gibson, president, share a laugh before departing on a walk to raise awareness on ostomy.
Ostomy Canada offers support networking and information for the person dealing with ostomy, their families, caregivers and friends. For more information, visit www.ostomycanada.ca or call 1-888-969-9698.
