Local volunteer organizations showcased their efforts again with a real partnership in service by collecting donations totalling $8,000 to assist local schools in the fight against food insecurity. In the last couple of years, Kiwanis service clubs got together only in the fall. This year, the Kiwanis Club of Huntsville Muskoka initiated a second round to assist the schools with funding during their second semester.
Kiwanian Club of Huntsville Muskoka President Kathy Higgins said that although she was excited to see the initial support for local schools in the last couple of years, she knew more was needed. “Food insecurity is growing more than we can imagine. We would like to be part of the solution to improve the lives of the children in our community, hence the need for a second round of donations during the school year,” she said.
Service club partners, including Baysville Lions, Dorset Lions, and Dwight Lions, along with the Kiwanis Club of Huntsville Muskoka, met with store managers to formally present their pledges and, at that time, joined with school officials to receive their gift cards. Stephenson Lions assisted in September 2023 with a one-time, larger-than-normal donation.
Higgins, a relatively new Kiwanian, was overwhelmed with the generosity and realized just how wonderful it is to gather as service clubs and bond on the issue of food security for children.
We thank all Service Clubs, including Huntsville Rotary, Rotary of North Muskoka, Rotary People of Action, Dwight Lions, Dorset Lions, Stephenson Lions, Baysville Lions and the Kiwanis Club of Huntsville Muskoka for their continued support of the children of Muskoka, said Higgins.
