According to Len Ross, the President of the Rotary Club of Huntsville, it’s not all blue sky, blue water, loons, and hopping robins here.
He was speaking about the perception that many of us have of this area and, in particular, the perception of the many people who do not live here full-time. Huntsville is an amazing place to live and a beautiful vacation area, but many of our residents are in survival mode because of food insecurity. They are constantly having to find ways to feed themselves and their families. As a result of this need, food banks have been established by and run by caring people and organizations.
The Table Soup Kitchen Foundation is one such organization, and The Salvation Army is another. These organizations work diligently to serve the food needs of more than 400 families a week. To meet this need, their efforts require money and community support. Both organizations do an amazing job and are supported by donations of money from the community at large as well as several retail and wholesale food suppliers and distributors. However, it is not enough, and both organizations continue to seek more support to meet a growing need.

The Rotary Club of Huntsville has been active in this community for 90 years, quietly working with other community organizations, government, and business leaders to make Huntsville a better place to live. Upon learning of this dire need, the club members unanimously agreed to offer both the Table Soup Kitchen Foundation and the Salvation Army a yearly donation of $5000.00. Sadly, it still won’t be enough, but Len believes that this, together with a few more dollars from each of us and with the continued support of the business community, Huntsville will continue to be an amazing place to live.
