Roads License Agreement Program update: Upcoming report, public engagement, and key dates

From the Township of Lake of Bays

As part of the ongoing review and public engagement regarding the Roads License Agreement Program and the moratorium implemented earlier this year, we would like to provide an update on our progress and next steps:

  • A draft report, including staff recommendations based on the public feedback received so far, is currently being finalized and will be available for public review and comment on our website on January 7, 2025.
  • This draft report, titled The Future of the Roads License Agreement Program, will outline the findings from the review process, including recommendations based on public feedback and input from legal and insurance experts.
  • The draft report will be presented at the January 14, 2025, Council meeting. Please note that no final decisions will be made at this meeting, as it will focus on presenting and discussing the report. The report will remain open for public review and comment before being brought back to Council for further consideration.
  • Public engagement will continue after the Council meeting, with staff accepting input, questions, and recommendations from the public. The final report will be presented at the February 11, 2025, Council meeting, where a decision on the program and its moratorium will be made.

We encourage everyone to subscribe to the news and public notices on our website, additionally the report will be made available on our dedicated Roads License Agreement Webpage at lakeofbays.on.ca/RLA.

RLA’s are not necessary, not needed now and were there was never a problem. Simply remove the RLA policy, in the same manner where RLA’s were found not to be required in Tay Valley, Kearney, to name a few recent examples. We do not want or need a report, just removal of the RLA.

The public has made it very, very clear with unanimous disapproval of RLA’s that the policy is to be scrapped outright. There is no need for continued discussions to save a poorly conceived cash grab program, with an even poorer implementation.

The writing is on the wall, taxpayers are calling for removal of RLA’s, not a continued dragging on debate. A reminder, there is an upcoming election in 2026, this will not be forgotten…

Thank you so much for publishing this information. Our community is struggling what feels like a giant over reach on the RLA. It appears that certain letters written by the public have not been openly provided by the township! Is this the case?
This process has not felt transparent and I would hope that this would be addressed in a public forum in the summer when seasonal residents can attend. This issue primarily impacts seasonal residents and it should be addressed publicly and with complete transparency. The community at large is not going to let this one go. What’s next?
