While the spirit of giving is everywhere, people naturally feel inclined to donate to food drives and food banks. We do what we can to help those who might be facing a hungry holiday.
But the problems don’t go away on January 2. For one household out of every eight in Simcoe Muskoka, there isn’t enough money to cover the bills and the meals together. It’s often easier to cut back on food when the other bills have to be covered.
Going hungry is more than uncomfortable: It can create long-term health issues, especially for growing children. Only year-round solutions can address the year-round problem of low income and hunger: “No money for food is Cent$less”.
While you’re donating to a favourite charity this season, think of the ways you could be working for change. Visit the health unit website at www.smdhu.org/centsless. Or call Health Connection at 705-721-7520 or 1-877-721-7520 weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
