Reel Alternatives presents fall line-up of films in partnership with the Algonquin Theatre

Reel Alternatives Huntsville is back for another season and is thrilled to have established a new partnership with the Town of Huntsville. While the non-profit group has shown films at the town-managed theatre in the past, the partnership with the Algonquin Theatre for their 24th season marks the shared investment of bringing TIFF Film Circuit films to the community of Huntsville.

“As part of TIFF Film Circuit, Reel Alternatives brings a great variety of new quality films from the  Canadian and global film industry to the community, adding to the Town of Huntsville’s vibrant art and culture scene,” says Melania Nadj, Acting Theatre Manager. “The partnership with Reel Alternatives  underscores the Algonquin Theatre’s efforts to diversify programming by offering film screenings and to increase the community’s access to the arts.”

Sure to be an audience hit, The Miracle Club will launch the 2023/24 Reel Alternatives season on Monday, September 18. Set in 1967, The Miracle Club is a heartwarming film that follows the story of three generations of close friends, Lily (Maggie Smith), Eileen (Kathy Bates), and Dolly (Agnes O’Casey) of Ballygar, a hard-knocks community in Dublin, who have one tantalizing dream — to win a pilgrimage to the sacred French town of Lourdes, that place of miracles that draws millions of visitors each year. When the chance to win presents itself, the women seize it. With a little interference from their priest, they become the ‘lucky’ ones to win the trip of a lifetime at their local raffle night. However, just before their trip, their old friend Chrissie (Laura Linney) arrives in Ballygar for her mother’s funeral, dampening their good mood and well-laid plans.

Long-term supporter, The Oxtongue Gallery, was quick to renew their support for the upcoming season by sponsoring The Miracle Club. Tickets are available through the  Algonquin Theatre online and by phone (705-789-4975) or via reelalternativeshuntsville.ca.

“Offering TIFF Film Circuit selections jointly with the Town through the rental of the Algonquin Theatre is a win-win for everyone who feels that offering cultural experiences through film is important for our community. We feel film is just as significant as musical or theatrical productions, especially when we no longer have a cinema in town,” says Dan Watson, Reel Alternatives’ president, who also serves as the  Executive Director and driving force of the Huntsville Festival of the Arts. “Our audiences love this venue, and we want to thank the town staff and theatre volunteers for their continued support.”

Future Fall films are as follows: October 2 – Bones of Crows (TBC), a psychological drama about surviving  Canada’s residential school system; October 16 – BlackBerry which tells the story of the rise and fall of the Canadian smartphone pioneer; November 6 – Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret, adapted from  the beloved book by Judy Blume; November 20 – Past Lives, a decades and culture-spanning romance from South Korean-Canadian director Celine Song; December 4 – You Hurt My Feelings starring Julia Louis Dreyfus; and Jules, about an alien who is befriended by Ben Kinglsley’s character after the creature crashes into his backyard, which screens on December 18.

All Reel Alternative films are available for sponsorship for an amount of $175. Any individual or business interested in becoming a Reel sponsor can contact Rob at [email protected]. For more information and tickets visit reelalternativeshuntsville.ca.
