The District Municipality of Muskoka is expected to seek public input on a proposed robotics modular home manufacturing facility to be built on airport lands.
According to sources, the District has been in discussions with Promise Robotics, which would supply the equipment and know-how for the factory. An estimated 20 people would be required to run the factory, which would produce mostly non-market rental housing. Sources say the total project cost is being estimated at $17M.
The District has already spent roughly $250,000 exploring the project’s feasibility, according to sources.
On Monday, July 20, 2026, District Council emerged from closed-session discussions with a resolution instructing staff to undertake public engagement on establishing a Municipal Services Corporation for non-market housing production.
More details about the project are expected to be released by the District in the coming weeks.
“I don’t believe that the District should be getting into the manufacturing business. That should be left to the private sector,” said one of the sources. “This initiative should be completely paused until the next term of council.”
