When was the last time you used one of these in Huntsville?

Remember searching for quarters to make a call? Did you ever use a pay phone in Huntsville? Where?
Cell phones have pretty much replaced landlines as well as pay phones but not in Baysville! There is still a pay phone outside of the Baysvile Library. For the curious, local calls now cost 50 cents and if all you’ve got is a toonie, well then, you better get some change because as the face of the pay phone states, you won’t get change. Happy dialing!

I do happen to have a story about a payphone in Huntsville. As a young child, I never passed a pay phone without checking the change slot. One day in the early sixties, my sister and I were picking up something for our Mom at Boley’s Bakery. Before leaving we of course checked the payphone in the diner. Boy did we strike it rich! 65 cents – the best take we’d ever had! Talk about adrenaline! However, since the phone was in the Bakery, we weren’t sure if it was OK to claim it. So, we did “the right thing” and turned it in at the counter where it was happily received. What a let down…
Lovely picture of the Millenium pay phone, which I had a hand in developing at
Bell Northern around 1980 We knew cellular would come but Nortel needed a product to replace the ageing Centurion pay phone.
Examined lots of features but decided to make it quite simple, eschewing change making and coin paid long distance in favor of calling cards.
It was designed with higher value coinage like loonies and toonies in mind. A fun project and a great product, still in used where needed.
