Part of Brunel Rd getting speed reduction, Aspdin Rd to remain the same

The speed limit on Brunel Road from #818 southerly to Markle’s Road will see a decrease from 80km/h to 60km/h.

The decrease comes as a response to Huntsville Council’s request that the District analyze speed reductions at both Brunel and Aspdin District roads. On Aspdin Road, the request involved a 10 km reduction from 100 metres east of 743 Aspdin Rd to Bethune Rd. Council requested that the speed in that area be reduced from 60km/h to 50km/h.

Brandon Hall, Civil Engineering Technologist, told councillors that based on the parameters the District uses to analyze speed reductions, a reduction of speed on Aspding Road was denied.

In his report, Hall noted the following five criteria are used when analyzing posted speed limits:

• Transportation Association of Canada (TAC) Automated Speed Limit Guidelines;

• Observed traffic Counts and 85th percentile speed;

• Accident history;

• Observed operating speed compared to posted speed; and

• Other considerations described within each report.

Deputy Mayor Dan Armour said he spoke to the issue at District’s Engineering and Public Works committee and it can be considered further as the settlement area expands and more residents move to the area. “It’s not off the books but currently they’re just denying it so we can bring it back again…”

    When I saw this I had to check the calendar to see if it was April 1st. What a useless restriction on the flow of traffic. I live on the other side of this zone and travel this stretch often. It is a beautiful drive and sometimes when cruising home and there is no other traffic I find myself cruising along well under the posted 80 km limit, however if there is some urgency in my trip to town I find myself going a little over. As mentioned earlier, there are no homes on this stretch, it is a long straight drive with good visablety. Don’t see the need for this at all.

  2. John Malloy says:

    The speed limit reduction on Brunel is unnecessary s there is nothing but bush and swamp along the flats, if there were homes there it would be different. Aspdin road needs the limit changed due to homes & businesses along that stretch of road.

  3. Colleen Hemmings says:

    The speed limit on Aspdin Road isn’t observed by probably 50 percent of the people who drive it. It’s insane how fast some of these vehicles are moving. Needs more policing along the strip between Bickley Ford and Etwell Road for sure.

  4. Ross MacKinnon says:

    They keep reducing the speed limit on Brunel road we will be better off to walk and get from Baysville to Huntsville faster then driving.

  5. Ryan Vallentin says:

    Great, another unnecessary speed limit reduction on Brunel. In my thirteen years of multiple daily drives into town from my home down Brunel, there has not been a single incident in this stretch. Should have raised it to a 90 kph zone instead of reducing it to 60.
