Our Town with Grant Nickalls: Unplugged

Each week, Huntsville’s own Grant Nickalls will inspire us, entertain us, make us laugh or perhaps cry, but always he will remind us why Huntsville is the best place on earth to call home.

This week in Our Town, Grant gets unplugged. When was the last time you did?

Grant, Great thoughts, nice pictures I hope it makes people think a bit.
A few years ago, my son and I rode the bike trail along the old railway bed in part of Algonquin Park, and for many years I have taken several annual boat and canoe trips to the park. THE MAIN DIFFERENCE between Algonquin and all the other “non -park” lakes is the sounds one hears!

Lets face it, most of the lakes in the area are physically all the same, but if you want to call it maybe a “social difference” the difference is huge.

In the park, all you can hear is the birds, the wind in the leaves, the water… that sort of thing.

Outside the park it is almost impossible to sit for a minute and listen and not be inflicted with the sound of some ATV, some over zealous property maintainer with a leaf blower, or some idiot with a 500 HP diesel pick up with knobby tires and a heavy right foot or those extremely “impersonal” “personal watercraft”. The list goes on and on, perhaps culminating in the strange concept that one cannot wake board without a 5 kw stereo playing really bad rock/rap music that can be heard before the boat even comes into view.

In any event it is all about noise and Grant, you have figured this out!!
