Olivia and Noah top baby names in 2020, but some regions bucked the trend

The Ontario government has released the top baby names in the province for 2020.

For the baby girls, Olivia has now been the top name in Ontario for over a decade, with 11 consecutive years in the number-one spot. Charlotte continues as the second-most popular name for girls and edged out Olivia in Eastern Ontario for top spot. Isla is new to the top 10 for 2020.

A few names—Abigail, Avery, Everleigh, Hazel, Ivy, Lily, Nora, and Paisley—made regional lists but didn’t have high enough numbers to make the province-wide top ten.

Noah took the top spot as the most popular name for boys for the second year in a row, but regionally only made top spot in Central Ontario. Benjamin edged ahead in Eastern Ontario while Oliver took top honours in Southwestern Ontario. Noah appeared way down in ninth place in Northern Ontario, displaced by Lincoln and others for higher rankings.

Liam followed closely behind provincially, and Theodore and Leo made it into the top 10.

Other names were popular at a regional level, particularly in Northern Ontario. Hudson, Jackson and Jaxon, Levi, Lincoln, Muhammad, Nathan, and Owen all appeared on regional top tens.

Parents should register their child’s birth within 30 days of welcoming their newborns.

“We’re making it easier than ever for Ontario parents to register their newborns through our refreshed 5-in-1 Newborn Bundle service, letting parents apply for critical documents like their child’s birth certificate and Social Insurance Number in one hassle-free application,” said Ross Romano, Minister of Government and Consumer Services, in a media release. “Young families can now conveniently take care of these essentials online, right from the comfort of their own home, and spend more time focusing on their new addition.”

ServiceOntario’s 5-in-1 Newborn Bundle was updated this past fall. The refreshed Newborn Bundle allows parents to quickly apply for their child’s birth certificate, Social Insurance Number, Canada Child Benefits (including the Ontario Child Benefit), and Education Savings Referral service all through one application.
