The snow is just weeks away and many people are planning to escape by going south, or by hibernating indoors. However, there is a third way of dealing with winter – by facing the elements head-on, outdoors, but warm, and fit; by Nordic Skiing of course!
Strap on some skis and hit the trails at Arrowhead Provincial Park, and within 20 minutes, you will be toasty warm, and embracing the outdoors with joy! Nordic skiing is one of the best ways to develop full body fitness while you improve your cardiac ability with little chance of injury. Nordic skiing is perfect cross-training for ANY other sport as it builds both fitness and muscle strength. It’s easy on the joints so it’s also great for the not-so-young athletes that may be struggling with hip or knee injuries.
That said, there are ways to further improve your enjoyment of your time on the trails. The first thing to do is invest in some good equipment. The technology has evolved significantly over the past few decades, and well-constructed skis, boots that provide foot support, and poles that properly extend your glide are extremely important for a safe and enjoyable experience.
It may be costly to get outfitted, but Arrowhead Nordic Ski Club (ANSC) is here to help. This Sunday (October 23), in cooperation with Algonquin Outfitters (AO), the Club is offering a Ski Swap at Arrowhead Provincial Park. Plenty of great deals on quality used equipment will be available for purchase from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. In addition, you can count on quality expertise to assist you with your purchases. ANSC coaches, along with AO staff will be there to provide you with information on the types of skis for skiers of all ages and abilities. It’s one of Muskoka’s worst-kept secret so arrive early for the best selection. If you have skis to sell, register them at Algonquin Outfitters on Thursday, Friday or Saturday for Sunday’s ski swap at the park. Proceeds from our fund-raising ventures are used to support our youth programs and our Jackrabbit Bursary program.
It is not just the equipment technology that has changed over the years, but the technique has also refined. You can choose from skating or classic technique, and hit the trails on your own. However, a few lessons can help you refine that technique so you can ski like a pro. ANSC offers a range of programs for all ages and levels:
Child and Youth Programs:
- JackRabbit and Bunnyrabbit for the very young beginners.
- Lynx for beginners ages 9 and up
- Track Attack for JackRabbit graduates interested in trying racing
- Arrowhead Race Crew for young Athletes (under 18 years) that want to participate in provincial races
